The whole 'weight loss' industry is exploding with new ideas promising people that
they can make them thin. There are so many meal plans, weight loss regimes, training programmes and even
pills to burn fat with newer ideas arising
everyday.
Within these plans are wonder working diets such as the low calorie diet.
Now these diets do without a doubt make you lose weight and fast. This makes you happy and of course the company
happy as you are providing them money whilst simultaneously building their reputation. However, losing weight
using diets such as the low
calorie diet can be dangerous in the long run even though
it provides you with the short term weight loss that you desire.
Going on a low calorie diet such as 1000 to 1200
calories or less per day can eventually lead to weight gain, never mind weight loss. To keep the weight off
permanently you will have to stay on this diet for the rest of your days. Nobody wants to put themselves in that
position.
Now let me explain
what will happen to your body's system without going into to much biology business. When you go on a low calorie
diet, your body is starved from the natural energy it needs to maintain bodily functions. This leads to loss in
weight, but not all is fat. In fact more of it will probably be due to loss of muscle
mass. Losing muscle will reduce the metabolic processes
within your body as this occurs in the muscles.
Now this may seem good as
you are getting thinner, but eventually, when you get bored of the effort required, you'll go back to your
normal diet. Then what happens? Not only will your system crave everything x10 harder, your body will
consume every bit of fat intake for energy, it will not be able to burn off the fat due to the decrease in
metabolism. What this will result in is a shapeless person who has a flabby gut and no definition at all. In my
opinion, this is probably the worst position to be in.

Julia's Story
This is exactly what
happened to Julia as her metabolic rate was processing approximately 2500 calories
per day to maintain her weight. She then decided she wanted to lose some of that
weight and went on the infamous low calorie diet that enabled her to lose 5 pounds
per week for the a duration of 2 weeks. This was a happy story for Julia but what
she didn't assume was that the majority of the loss was from her muscle mass, so
she started to go back to the usual everyday eating habits, i.e. 2500 calories per
day.
Due to losing this muscle mass which as I stated, is important for
metabolism as 1 pound of muscle can metabolize 30-70 calories whilst fat in the
other hand is between 0-10 calories. During the weight loss episode, 6 of the 10
pounds of weight loss was indeed her
muscle.
So to put this into context, before the diet her
metabolic rate was 2500 calories per day, and then during the diet this decreased
to 2100 calories per day. Now converting back to her old ways by consuming 2500
calories, her body simply can't process the intake resulting in her going beyond
the weight she lost and putting even more on making her even fatter. Is this really
a good plan? You decide!
So now what? Julia will go back to another low calorie diet and then another and
over time getting worse and worse. This is the sole reason why many people complain
that they hardly eat and can't compose a decent shape. This is because of no muscle
mass for metabolism and no consistency within a diet. Consistency is key and
extremity is stupid. Forget the fact that extreme diets are dangerous. Going to
extreme will simply not work.
